Couponicus Says-

I've been watching snippets of TLC's Extreme Couponing show. It has certainly helped reignite an interest in my coupon usage. Plus, my Mom has a little habit of trolling the local recycling bins looking for unused inserts which is nice since I don't subscribe to the paper anymore.

Other than a few coupons for free items I've gotten for "liking" things on facebook, I don't have any major savings victories to share. My take on couponing will never be what you call extreme or coupon queen. I like to get things we'll actually use for as cheaply as possible without straining myself to do so. When I am a casual coupon user I typically save between $4-8 with coupons.
I think that's because I also tend to buy generics and dent and ding items that do not have coupons.

The Extreme Couponers on the TLC show sometimes have mountains of the same item that they've gotten for pennies on the dollar. But, I don't see victory there. I see waste, compulsion and hoarding. If your family can't use up an item before it expires then please donate your extras to a local charity. It's so much better than having all that stuff end up in the land fill because it expired.

Our family is not large so I see no need to have a basement filled with items that will expire before we can use them. I like to have a back up of two or three extra items. Of course, that's not always been the case. I still have multiple cans of frosting and beans in the basement that are nearing the end of their lives. We've been baking a lot of cake and eating a lot of beans lately. I don't really want to stockpile like that again unless food scarcity (or price) becomes a big issue.

I also really don't want to pay for coupons anymore. If I can't find them free or print them I really don't want to mess with them. Thus, I will never be a reigning coupon queen.

Pizza Crust and Online Shopping for Childrens Clothes

We're having pizza for dinner. Lately every time the kids hear that we're having homemade pizza they start groaning and complaining. Meanwhile, Hubby and I love my pizza.
I decided to try another pizza crust recipe. This one is a bread machine Pizza Hut knock off. Since my daughter loves Pizza Hut, maybe this will finally win her over.
Our normal pizza dough machine recipe is perfectly fine though and more pantry friendly.

For toppings we have:
Hunt's Canned Sauce (standard $1 a can- will have leftovers)
Mozzarella (Aldi)
Mushrooms (produce clearance for .69 cents)
Sunflower seeds (seems weird but really good)
Feta cheese (on sale for $1)
Tomato Slices (leftover from last night)
Veggie Pepperoni (need to use up soon)

**update- The pizza hut crust was deemed delicious by me and Hubby and better than normal by my kiddos. The only downside is the lengthy cooking time for the crust. Next time I will cook it on a normal pizza pan.

Children's Place is having a clearance sale on select clothing items. Most of what I found online were smaller childrens clothes (12m - 3t) but I did manage to find a few things to buy. I bought two t shirts for my niece's birthdays in May and a fall outfit for Big Girl.
My total after shipping and taxes for three shirts and one pair of pants was $22.91. This is after I used a coupon code (check retailmenot.com) for 15% off any purchase. I also went through ebates.com. That saved me another 3%. (And I used my Discover card for 1% cash back). That brings my total for each item somewhere around $5.50).

Of course, considering that my Mom hit the motherlode with a stop at a thrift store that was having 25 cent sale on all clothes when she was on the way to my house- $5.50 per item seems outrageous. I think that if I only relied on my Mom's occasional second hand shopping to dress my kids, I probably would only have to buy soccer cleats and shin guards. She found a nice thick winter coat from Old Navy for Little Guy for $1. And it still had the hood attached. I spent $2 on a similar coat minus the hood for him at another thrift store on the sale rack. I think I'll sell the one I bought at our next garage sale and keep the one my Mom bought.

Free After Rebate Links and What's For Dinner Tonight

Kellogg's Fiber Plus Cereal

Kellogg's Wheatables Crackers

Today is my 14th wedding anniversary. But, we're not really doing anything special tonight. Instead my Mom came up on Saturday to sit on our kids so we could escape to a local Drury for a staycation night. The one benefit of Hubby's frequent work travel is perks like free flights and free hotel stays. So, tonight is pretty low key. And I promised I'd cook tonight since we ate out a lot this weekend (Chinese take out, pizza, taco bell).

I wasn't exactly feeling inspired and was scrambling around to find something to put together.
So we're having-
Sliced avocado (on sale for .69 cents each) and sliced tomato (on sale for .99 a pound)
A bag of meatless "chicken" finger things (new brand I'm going to try
A box of au gratin potatoes I found in the pantry
Baked sugar snap peas (baking them with some spike, nutmeg, a bit of butter and some veggie broth)

I'm ready for another pantry challenge to clean out old stuff and work on new recipes. I'm ready to start making my own protein substitutes also. We're definitely in a food rut and I need to shake things up make it a bit healthier too by making more vegan foods. Vegan cooking is amazingly pantry friendly.

Butter, Gardens, and Selling Kids Stuff

Land O' Lakes wants to give you a coupon for a free product if you send in a UPC for another butter product. Weird, but whatever. Go here for details.

Not much here except working in the front garden patch that Hubby cleared. I planted squash in our front garden. Last night I got busy and planted tomatoes in containers on our backyard patio.
I still have more to go. I started green pepper seeds and I have one cantaloupe baby to plant. Today I might buy a strawberry plant or two for our side garden.

I've got one tub full of kids clothes, shoes, toys, books, and art to take to the re-sell shop tomorrow. And the Veteran's Association is coming by in a week to pick up our donation so whatever doesn't sell is going out anyway. I have a few stained and holey things that I don't feel good about donating. It makes me glad to see the second hand clothes that I used on two kids be too worn out to donate. I think they'll make nice rags or doll clothes for Big Girl.

Gotta go. Hubby's got a coupon for Chinese food burning a hole in his pocket.

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

It's Tuesday- I haven't messed up yet.

Feeling pretty good about my spending lately. I did spend $5 at the food pantry thrift store today.
I popped in for a minute after making a small donation of food and toiletry items.
I bought two blouses for me (bogo), a dress for my Mom ($1), a novel, a Richard Scary vhs, a Veggie Tales dvd, and a bar of handmade soap in a pretty drawstring bag.

I've got our laundry hanging to dry outside. My bread machine is mixing and kneading away at a loaf of onion herb bread. I have dinner planned and even plan on making baked apples for dessert.

I am going to research making my own liquid hand soap out of soap slivers and look online for a discount gift card for a cousin who's getting married soon.

Dinner Ideas, Mail Bag, Library Bag and Couponing at Walmart

Dinner Ideas-
I'm planning on making dinner at home again tonight but I have no clear plans. I have a bag of wheat hoagies and a box of slightly expired hamburger helper to use up. I'm thinking of making veggie "meat"balls for Italian hoagies tonight. The hamburger noodle stuff can wait until tomorrow. I also have some romaine lettuce to use up so I'm thinking Asian lettuce wraps for later in the week. I have a can of low sugar pears in the pantry. How should I fix those so they are a low fat tasty dessert? I was thinking of sprinkling a little cinnamon and brown sugar on them and baking them in a buttered pan.

Mail Bag-

I've been ordering a lot of freebies, book swap and dvd items, and samples for the past month or two. I've been really enjoying checking the mail too. Today there's not much though-

A paperback swapped copy of The Busy Woman's Guide to Healthy Eating by Emilie Barnes and Sue Gregg. I've heard good things about it. Maybe it will inspire some new recipes this week.

An invitation to a dinner and a free reservation for a hotel stay in Kansas City for one of hubby's co-workers retirement party. I'm looking forward to going to this and seeing some friends in KC at the same time.

Grocery store circulars and a few adds with good coupons. I've spent part of the last two days re-organizing my coupon files and getting caught up on clipping and filing. These grocery store circulars will get a thorough going over before they get recycled.

Library Bag-

We managed a long overdue trip to the library to return dvds and books. I was happy to snag two "new to us" Veggie Tales videos and a copy of The Lightening Thief for me. Right now I'm reading Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert and really enjoying it. There are even a few paragraphs I plan on photocopying for my daughter for when she's older. I handed over the few dollars and coins in my purse to cover our fines but I still figure we get a bargain out of our library membership.

Walmart Shopping-

While Little Guy was in his gymnastics class I was working on my coupon files and pulling out any coupon for what we needed. The total $72 before coupons and I spent about $55 after coupons. I did splurge on a sleep tank from the $1 clearance rack though.

So, that's my day so far. What have you been up to?

Filling Easter Baskets

Easter is a little over a month away. I'm a little late doing a free filler search online but here's what I've found:

Free train coloring book from Norfolk Southern. This is great for my train loving boy.

Free sample of kid's cream of wheat. There are flavors like Spongebob Chocolate lagoon.

Mariani Dried Plums sample. Use the code SUPERFRUIT

Free Kid card from Hallmark.com.

Free family dvd. You need to supply your phone number so they can help you select a dvd.

Free Kashi cereal bar sample

Burt's Bees tooth paste sample.

Free Board Book from LeapFrog when you register and link up a toy you have from them. This was easy to do.

Not really a free sample but here's a code for 50 points for disneymovierewards.com 9FTMRYWEK

So far I've collected:

Two after Christmas baskets marked way down.

A pipe cleaner easter bunny kit NIP for .50 at the thrift store

After Valentine's day candy for 50-75% off

A Barbie Dvd that I received with my swapadvd credits.

A four pack of Hubba Bubba gum for 1.19 that I plan on dividing

A really gross bugs video from the 1$ store.

I still have paperbackswap credits to use to get more kids books too.
Also, our library has sale books for ten cents.

What freebies or ideas do you have for your frugal Easter basket?

Free Valentines

If you have children who need to take Valentine's cards to school you might want to stop by Krispy Kreme and pick up some free cards.

I picked up a free pack of twelve cute cards today and all have an attached coupon for a free donut.

I have read that these are free after the purchase of a dozen donuts but I only purchased three.

Clearance At Children's Place

A lot of the stock is already sold out but if you hurry you could still scoop up some good deals.

I found cute long sleeved shirts for 1.69 for Big Girl and new fleece items for Little Guy were as low as 2.49. That's cheaper than regular price at the Goodwill.

Standard Shipping is $5 no matter how much you purchase but if you use the code C99AA you'll get 15% off.
I went through ebates for an additional 3% back.

Monday, January 4, 2010

Saving at JcPenney.com.

Go through Ebates and get 3% back.

Pantry Challenge Day Three

Who else has found themselves cleaning out their 2009 coupons and getting the urge to use any valuable coupons before they expire? The 2010 coupons were abundant this weekend too.
I combined Target/MFR coupons yesterday and bought a few things we use all the time. I couldn't pass up MorningStar for .50 a box. It looks like Target put up new coupons too. I also picked up a bottle of Olay Quench Lotion. You can print the rebate here.
The rest of the grocery store circulars went into the recycling bin. I don't need extra temptation.

Sunday-

Breakfast- donuts found in the snack drawer and veggie sausage. Milk
Lunch- frozen pizza from the basement freezer. Leftover chocolate cake.
Dinner- Stir Fried Tofu from the fridge mixed with a frozen dinner kit. Fresh Mango for dessert.

Plans for Monday-

Breakfast- leftover pancakes with banana slices for the kids
Lunch- we had yogurt, tomato soup, and crackers (the eldest takes her lunch so she'll have pbj, pretzels, and orange slices)
Dinner- Potato, Carrot, Onion, and Boca roasted with gravy. Apple Pie for dessert.

Hubby found a bag of frozen bread downstairs so my plans for making bread are put off for a few days. I am making ricotta now too so I'll be thinking about making a cheesy noodle dish soon. I keep finding milk at Save-A-Lot on clearance for .99 and can't seem to pass it up. Even though some of it gets thrown out before it gets used.

Fall is Here- Time for Baking

I love Gooseberry Patch stuff. I haven't actually let myself buy anything from their online store but I love my free cook booklets that I ordered.

You can get one here.

20% off Big Lots Coupon

For this Sunday the 19th only.

Go here.

Famous Footwear Savings.

Thanks to Centsible Sawyer for bringing my attention to this sale! Use promo code JULY15 and get 15% off of your purchase. Also through September 19th they are having a BOGO 1/2 sale and Free Ground Shipping. I signed up for a Famous Footwear rewards card to get even more rewards.
With two little kids, we go through a lot of shoes and I can't always find what we need second hand.

I bought:
Naturalizer slip on loafers for me
Addidas soccer shoes for the kids
Cali girl slip ons for Big Girl
Tennis shoes for Little Guy

Total: 54.46
That's 13.61 per pair not including any rewards or % back I may get (roughly $5 after ebates and credit card incentives- then it's 12.36 per pair). I can live with that. And I didn't have to step foot in a store.

Go through Ebates.com or sign up through my account and we'll both save big $. Famous Footwear is giving 9% back.

I'm so glad I did a clothing and shoe inventory so I could shop more intelligently. I'm filling gaps instead of overloading on what we already have.

Grocery Shopping and How am I doing on our $60 budget

On my two previous shopping trips to Foods For Less and Wal-Mart I spent $27.32.

Today I went to Schnucks with my coupon box to get a few deals-

2 Martha White Muffin mixes- not on sale at $1.08 apiece
2 Lipton Decaf ice tea bags- 3.84- .75 MFR coupon - 1.50 store coupon makes them $2.34 each
Bananas- not on sale at .65 an lb. .64 cents
C&H 4 pound sugar bag- on sale for 1.79 minus .30 MFR coupon + store double = 1.19
2 Ragu sauces on sale for 1.58 minus two MFR coupons totaling 1.20 = .98 cents apiece

2 Snickers Bars for Friday night date night- BOGO after MFR coupon = .33 cents each
One Everything Bagel for my breakfast- .65 cents
Total before coupons $35.79
After coupons and rebate= $22.31

Grocery Budget for the week is $60. I've spent 51.63. That leaves 8.37 in the budget to scope out Dierbergs for goodies and perhaps some free Marcal toilet paper.

Typing it all out makes me see where I'm wasting our money (snack foods, Hello!). And my grocery shopping in no way represents a balanced diet. But, with our stockpile of sale/couponed foods- I never have a normal grocery list anyway. Plus, I get a lot of things to donate by using coupons too.
