Gone to the Dogs

We've been dogless for two years.

I spent part of my morning looking at shelter dogs with the kids.

Anybody have any advice for a particular breed that would mix well with small kids and cats?
I want to make sure we get the best little guy for our family.

**It looks like we'll be putting my dog wish on hold for a little longer while we straighten out our to do list. sigh.**

I recommend something small but sturdy like a small terrier or a corgi. Good info on various breeds can be found at www.akc.org

Our dog is a rescued mixed breed - part German Shepherd, part Rottweiler and the biggest sweetie pie in the world.

I would suggest you tell the shelter staff that you are looking for a gentle dog and they will be able to help match you up.

While dogs do tend to exhibit their breed-traits, dogs are like people and their environment has a lot to do with how they behave.

Best wishes to you! there are many great pets in shelters just waiting for good homes.

One site I've found helpful is http://www.glowdog.com/bestdog/
because you can specify how important certain traits are for you (good w/kids, size, grooming and exercise needs) and that can point you in a breed direction. This still works for mutts, because you'll often have a general idea of the breed mixes based on appearance or shelter info!

So glad to hear you are looking at shelter dogs. :D

petfinder.com is also a great resource!
